Abstract

By the time an embryo has an ovulation age of 21 days the vascular system has began to appear as “blood islands”, scattered masses of angiogenic cell clusters which increase in numbers and size, acquire a lumen and eventually form a vascular plexus. Part of the plexus differentiates in the main channels and at the cephalad end of the embryo these channels further specialize, producing a pair of heart tubes which come to lie parallel to each other and eventually fuse to form a single tube.
