Abstract

The unit generally used is the Kilocalorie (Kcal, popularly but incorrectly also known as the Large Calorie, Cal): amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of 1 Kg water from 14.5 ° to 15.5 ° C. The Megajoule is gaining some acceptance: 1 MJ = 239 Kcal; 1 Kcal = 4.2 KJ. Ten MJ is roughly a day’s supply of energy, at a moderate level of activity.
