Abstract

It is only during the last 30 years that lung cancer has become a major public health problem. It is presently leading cause of cancer death in males from age 35 on and is becoming the leading cause in females. The current yearly incidence of lung cancer approaches 140,000 in the United States. Despite a better understanding of its natural history and some improvement in the therapeutic approach, the cure rate of lung cancer has not changed appreciably over the last 15 years, the 5-year survival remaining below 5% (1).
