Abstract

Reasons for utilizing digital chest radiography include: (a) the increasing costs of radiographic films and chemicals, (b) the limited dynamic range of films as a recording medium, (c) the costs and inconvenience of storage of radiographic film, (d) the potential for extracting more quantitative and qualitative information from digital images, (e) the ease of retrieving, displaying, and transferring digital images, (f) the possibility of decreasing the radiation doses to the patient, (g) the wish to integrate chest radiography into future digital picture archiving systems (PACS), and (h) the generally increasing demand from the medical community for faster and more economical handling and forwarding of medical information.
