Abstract

The International Congress of Mathematicians in the capital of Finland during the summer of 1978 was presided over by Olli Lehto, Helsinki, who was supported by the revered Finnish mathematician Rolf Nevanlinna as Honorary President. With more than three thousand registered members accompanied by another thousand or so associate members, from 83 countries, it was the largest scientific gathering ever to take place in Finland.
