Abstract

Diuretic drugs, agents which increase the volume of urine and promote the net loss of solute (NaCl) and water, are useful in treating a variety of diseases associated with edema formation (abnormal retention of salt and water by the kidney), especially congestive heart failure and cirrhosis of the liver. Some of these agents also have efficacy in the treatment of several non-edematous conditions such as essential hypertension.
