Abstract

Leiomyomas of the uterus occur in approximately 20% of women over 30 years of age in this country.8 Of the women who have leiomyomas of significant size, approximately 40% demonstrate infertility10; 50% of the patients in whom no other cause of infertility is demonstrated become pregnant on removal of the myoma.11 It is apparent that, in well-selected patients, myomectomy does increase fertility and it is an alternative for uterine preservation in those patients desiring childbearing capabilities.
