Aspartame consumption was the cause or aggravating factor for a variety of unexplained and “refractory” neurological, psychiatric, and behavioral disorders in 505 aspartame reactors. The criteria included (1) prompt and gratifying relief or the disappearance of symptoms and signs following its cessation, and (2) their predictable recurrence within hours or days after rechallenge. Such patients should be observed after stopping these products—preferably before ordering costly tests and multiple consultations. Among the high-risk groups are pregnant women, lactating mothers, young children, and older persons with memory impairment.
