As indicated in the conclusion of Chapter 1 (and documented by the studies reported in Chapters 3–7), it is extremely difficult to determine what part empathy actually plays in influencing counseling outcomes. In fact, due to empathy’s multidimensions (see Chapter 1 and Gladstein [1984] for the early theorists’ views and Chapter 2 for empirical evidence), it should be expected to have several parts in this process.
