Interferon Abnormalities and Peritonitis in Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis

Abstract

Bacterial peritonitis remains one of the most important complications of continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD). It was recently postulated that a defective peritoneal macrophage (PMØ) bactericidal capacity could be responsible for reduced local defense against microorganisms and a high incidence of peritonitis.(1) It has also been shown that interferon γ (IFN-γ) is the primary lymphokine required in vitro and in vivo for PMØ activation, which consists of enhanced oxidative metabolism and microbicidal activity.(2)
