Crossed Fiber Models of the Particle-Surface Interaction

  • Chapter
Particles on Surfaces 1

Abstract

Crossed fibers are a useful model for studying the adhesion forces that exist between sphere-sphere and sphere-surface systems. Crossed fibers whose radii, composition and surface structure are known can easily be micromanipulated to establish various contact geometries. In addition, the same two fibers can be used repeatedly to acquire good statistics of the adhesion force. We describe a specially built apparatus which exploits the crossed fiber geometry to generate large numbers of contact and separation events between the same two fibers. For each event, the apparatus records a time which is monotonically related to the adhesion force. These data show several interesting effects, including “quantization,” i.e., discrete values of the adhesion force, which we describe in the paper.
