Abstract

Electrophoretic mobility investigations of purple membrane fragments of Halobacterium halobium using the particle electrophoresis method as primarily reported in 1982 are indicative for the pH dependence of membrane surface electric charge, as well as for a reversible acid induced purple to blue colour transition /1/. The blue membrane form demonstrates a more pronounced aggregation, which correlates with the reduced surface electric charge /data not shown/.
