Abstract
Because of the historical linkage of nerve excitation to the electrical stimulation of cells, electrophysiology has always appeared to offer the possibility of explaining a basic biological process in terms of electrochemical and physical properties. Thus, each new development in the physical chemistry of electrolyte solutions and membranes, has been used to contribute to a deeper insight into the properties of the biological system. Even the 200 year old controversy over Galvani’s “animal electricity” was resolved when Volta was able to show parallels between the structures and functions of the natural electric organ and a man-made inorganic battery (1).
