Cell Surface Mutants of Erwinia chrysanthemi: Possible Involvement of Iron Acquisition in Phytopathogenicity

Abstract

Compatible association between plant and phytopathogenic Erwinia chrysanthemi results in the development of soft rot symptoms in which bacterial depolymerizing activities are involved. Indeed it is now well established that pectate lyase isoenzymes, which degrade the pectic components of the plant cell walls play an essential role in plant tissue maceration and thus serve as virulence factors (Chatterjee and Starr, 1980; Collmer et al., 1982). In addition, E. chrysanthemi strains present a high degree of host specificity (Dickey, 1981). Infection of an incompatible host may also trigger a defense reaction in the plant which can correspond to the so-called hypersensitive response (Starr and Chatterjee, 1972; M. Lemattre, personal communication). These facts suggest the existence of a recognition event(s) which could depend on bacterial cell surface components.
