Drug Abuse Effects on the Reticuloendothelial and Immune Systems

Abstract

Numerous references can be found in the literature concerning drugs that have immunosuppressive properties. Some of these substances are frequently abused, and have significant effects on bodily functions. There is an increased frequency of certain types of infections associated with the use and abuse of these drugs. It follows that the action of these substances could be through their effects on the immune system. Before attempting to discuss the drugs and substances that have immunosuppressive properties and are frequently abused, it is necessary to define what is meant by immunosuppressive. The latter can be defined as “substances depressing immune responses.” This definition has considerable merit because of its simplicity. However, one problem with measuring immunosuppression is that there are various “arms” of the immune system, and immunosuppressive agents may suppress one or more types of immune reactions. It may be more correct to define immunosuppressive as any substance that inhibits at least one type of immune response.
