Abstract

To provide the context within which this paper is set, it will be necessary to give you a very brief outline of our study of recently arrived Indo-Chinese refugees. All arrived in Victoria, Australia, in the last 6 months of 1981 and were seen by Indo-Chinese health professionals (mainly doctors) within weeks of their arrival and typically at the hostel in which they were accommodated. All Indo-Chinese refugees arriving during this period were seen as long as the family group contained at least one member who was aged between 5 and 24 years of age. Heads of household were interviewed to establish the usual demographic details and to find out about losses endured and stresses experienced in their country of origin, on the journey, in the camps and in the early days following arrival in Australia.
