Abstract
Our experience and that of others indicates that lithium has definite usefulness in certain behavioral and emotional disorders of childhood. In this paper we summarize our experience with lithium treatment of children over the past 8 years. This has been done on an outpatient basis. We have proceeded on the basis that long-term acceptance and continuation of treatment is an important index of efficacy. In every patient, during the course of treatment, there were periods of time when treatment was discontinued as either an open or blind trial — in other words, there was every opportunity to discontinue treatment.
