Abstract

The ideas of collective field theory are reviewed by using Kogut-Susskind Hamiltonian of U(N) gauge theory. It is shown that the large N limit is the classical limit of the collective Hamiltonian. A solution is obtained for the strong coupling case. As an exactly solvable example we discuss the one plaquette Kogut-Susskind model in detail. In the final section the possibility of weak coupling expansion is briefly discussed.
