Abstract
The concept that uptake of small molecules by choroid plexus in vitro is representative of transport by choroid plexus in vivo has been well established in the past 20 years through the work of Lorenzo, Lajtha, Cutler, and others.8,10-12 The transport of amino acids, neurotransmitter amines, vitamins, and a variety of drugs has been described, and functional roles for transport of each category of substance have been proposed. Thus, the transport of amino acids can be viewed as a homeostatic mechanism that influences protein synthesis in the nervous system,4 and the transport of neurotransmitter amines such as norepinephrine and 5-hydroxytryptamine may serve to remove these substances released into the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from brain.15 Drugs are believed to be transported by systems that have as their primary role the transport of one of the natural substances mentioned.
