Group Personality and Group Behavior: An Expansion of Bion’s Model

  • Chapter
Book cover The Individual and the Group

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to present some methods for studying some aspects of group personality and some ideas about determinants of the culture of a group. The research project is inspired by Bion’s ideas about groups and we will use the concepts he has described. In particular we feel that his descriptions of the group culture in terms of basic assumptions fight, flight, dependency and pairing in addition to the work aspect are useful. We will use these terms as our descriptive concepts throughout the paper. We will focus on two questions in this paper.
