Abstract

The field of inner-shell excitation by atomic collision processes has been rooted in the development of modern atomic physics since the beginning of this century1. Since those early years, spectroscopic identification of electronic transitions induced by ion bombardment, and measurements of total cross-section have yielded basic information needed to characterize electronic processes. During the past fifteen years, the study of differential excitation and ionization probabilities, ‘impact parameter dependence’ P(b), has become important as a technique for gaining new insight into reaction mechanisms. In such experiments low-order angular correlation is established, namely between the projectile scattered through a given angle and quantities identifying the reaction path.
