Abstract

During slow ion-atom collisions, the collision partners will form a transient quasi-molecular system. Thus, during the collision, it is possible for vacancies to be transferred via molecular orbitals (MO) from empty levels of the projectile to inner shells of the collision partner. These inner-shell vacancies are then generally shared between the collision partners during the outgoing part of the collision.
