Round Table Summary : Genetic Engineering and DNA Repair

Abstract

The last few years have seen the introduction and development of new and exciting methods for the cloning of specific genes. These approaches provide investigators with powerful new approaches for elucidating many aspects of gene structure and function. The availability of cloned genes aids in the identification of the gene products, provides greater amounts of the gene products for biochemical studies and can also provide important information about the control of expression of the cloned genes. At the present time, most of the work on cloned genes related to DNA repair has been done with E. coli, but we can anticipate that work in this area will soon include the cloning of DNA repair genes from many diverse sources including humans.
