Political Violence

A Critical Evaluation

  • Chapter

Abstract

The goal of this chapter is to critically evaluate research on political violence with an emphasis on data-oriented studies rather than purely theoretical presentations. In addition, an attempt will be made to present sufficient information about the research to allow the reader to independently evaluate the material. This goal, coupled with space limitations, allowed examination of only a few areas of political conflict. Further, only selected studies could be presented. In some cases, additional analyses that further examined the positions of the original author were possible based on information reported in the article. It was felt that this orientation would provide a more valuable contribution than a series of short summaries of previous investigations. Such brief summaries generally rely on the investigator’s conclusions and it will become evident in many cases that questions can be raised about their validity.
