A Manual for a Cognitive Therapy

  • Chapter
Psychotherapy Process

Abstract

While discussing standards for evaluating systems of psychotherapy in his 1976 book, Cognitive Therapy and the Emotional Disorders, Beck wrote that “the system of psychotherapeutic procedures should be well defined and clearly and explicitly described.” In the present chapter, Beck and Bedrosian have done just that. In a relatively brief compass they have brought together in a highly organized fashion the basic principles and techniques necessary for understanding and practicing Beck’s particular approach to cognitive therapy. Although most everything relating to therapeutic procedures found in this chapter can also be found in Beck’s 1976 book, the present format makes his system far more accessible to those who seriously wish to employ or evaluate his approach to treatment.
