Survival and Immunological Responsiveness of Rat-Mouse Bone Marrow Chimeras

  • Chapter
Function and Structure of the Immune System

Abstract

Successful bone marrow transplantation (BMT) in an allogeneic donor-recipient combination can be achieved by eliminating all lymphocytes from donor BM. Our group has presented data showing that this, using a selectively lymphocytotoxic antiserum, leads to permanent hemopoietic chimerism without GVHR and to subsequent selective acceptance of skin grafts in a strongly and fully allogeneic rat strain combination (1,2). To determine whether the efficiency of this BM treatment is peculiar to the chosen model or whether its success is based on a more general principle, we tried to apply our protocol to a xenogeneic system with rats as donors and mice as recipients of BM.
