Abstract

I would like to address a question to Dr. Hutterer concerning the effect of cyclic AMP. What has interested me about this is that the original observations on the effect of this agent suggested that it only acts on intact cells. I was wondering whether this could be comparable to the suppression of the synthesis of cytochrome P-450 produced by high carbohydrate diets. The added cyclic AMP produces a high concentration of glucose in the hepatocyte by the well-known mechanisms of the late Dr. Sutherland and may well explain the results you are seeing here.
