Abstract
Biological problems are often intractable in that they present no easy starting point. Usually they require approaches at a number of different levels of organization, results from all of which have to be considered in order to discern the overall picture. Yet even then there is an innate difficulty in arriving at any satisfactory generalizations. These comments are particularly true of the immune response and yet it seems likely that it is from the field of immunity that we shall achieve an entry to the wider problems of differentiation of mammalian cells.
