Cell Interactions in the In Vitro Production of Antibodies to Chemically Defined Antigens
Antibody production to a number of antigens appears to be determined by a bicellular interaction (1–5).. In mice each of the interacting cells seems to be of a different ontogenetic origin, manifesting distinct functional properties. With regard to RBC antigens one of the cooperating cells was shown to derive from the thymus, the other from the bone marrow. Although both seem to be capable of recognizing antigenic determinants of the immunogen, only the bone marrow cell can produce antibodies (6,7).. Such a bicellular mechanism was inferred also from experiments of the secondary response to hapten protein conjugates (8–11). Cells recognizing antigeneic determinants of the carrier molecule seem to interact with cells recognizing the hapten determinants, and capable of producing anti-hapten antibodies.
