Abstract
Semicrystalline polymers contain anisotropic crystal lamellae. Commonly, the orientations of lamellae are correlated within certain regions, giving superstructures, e.g., spherulites or rods. As a consequence of crystallization and superstructure formation, some of the amorphous material is under stress, thus being oriented. The response of such a complex material to surface tractions depends strongly on the orientation distribution and the physical characteristics of the lamellae; these factors affect the stress state, and hence the resulting deformation, on a microscale throughout the specimen.
