Cell, Tissue, and Organ Culture as Teratologic Tools

Abstract

The purposes of this chapter are to introduce the teratologist to the vast field of cell, tissue, and organ culture and highlight the potential uses of these scientific approaches. Although in the strict sense the study of teratology implies environmental agents, the effect of mutant genes in development is so obviously related that some consideration will be given to the latter area in this discussion. Technical advances in these areas now offer a relatively simple tool for the study and analysis of isolated teratologic events. With the use of special plastics, premixed media, and recent literature descriptions, these techniques no longer have a mystical flavor and are certainly not out of the reach of the laboratory investigator in teratology.
