Teratogenesis and Oncogenesis

  • Chapter
Handbook of Teratology

Abstract

In recent years, numerous and varied relationships have been shown to exist between congenital malformations and neoplasms (Di Paolo and Kotin, 1966; Miller, 1969; Foulds, 1969; Warkany, 1971; Bolande, 1973b). The extent and complexity of these relationships is now only beginning to be appreciated as more and more associations are documented. Indeed, the kinship of teratogenesis and oncogenesis appears to be of fundamental importance in human developmental pathobiology. Its appreciation significantly adds to the understanding of the neoplastic process in general. It is the purpose of this chapter to document and examine the existing body of data concerning these relationships and show how in certain instances they may be held accountable for the pathogenesis of neoplastic disorders.
