Abstract
We consider a Jahn-Teller (JT) impurity ion with a doublet electronic ground state of Eg-symmetry at a lattice site of cubic symmetry and investigate the critical enhancement of the local JT-effect caused by the vibronic coupling to the soft mode of a structural phase transition of the host crystal. Furthermore, we study the temperature-dependence of the strain field around the JT-centre induced by the local JT-effect.
