Abstract
The present paper proposes a modification of current energy-loss theory to improve the accuracy of predictions of the distributions of energy losses of low-energy protons in medium- and high-atomic-number materials. This paper also presents experimental measurements of the distributions of energy losses for 1-MeV protons after penetrating thin targets of nitrogen and xenon. The agreement between predicted and experimental distributions is good.
