Mössbauer Effect Studies of Rare Earth Mixed Valent Materials

  • Chapter
Valence Instabilities and Related Narrow-Band Phenomena

Abstract

Fluctuating or intermediate electronic configurations pervade the natural sciences. They are at the heart of such varied phenomena as the working of haemoglobin, the colours of many rocks or the electrical conductivity of metals. Robin and Day [1] differentiated three classes of materials in their extensive survey of mixed valence chemistry. Another distinction between homogeneous and inhomogeneous mixed valence compounds with equivalent sites by Varma [2] and Batlogg [3] is particularly relevent to the rare earths. The former have narrow localised states hybridised with broad band states, both at the Fermi level, while the latter have only one type of state, localised or else forming a very narrow partly-filled band.
