Abstract
Because of the problem of ammonia formation during the conversion of NOx by reaction with reducing gases in a dual bed catalytic converter the need has arisen for an NH3 oxidation catalyst of high N2-selectivity. Examination of a number of candidate systems has demonstrated that several metal-oxide catalysts are available that exhibit high N2-selectivity, activity, and stability in ammonia oxidation. However selective oxidation of NH3 to N2 runs counter to the complete oxidation of HC and CO. The properties of some oxidation catalysts for ammonia, and for HC and CO will be discussed with special application to the auto-exhaust problem.
