Determination of Data-Acquisition Rate — The Nyquist Frequency

  • Chapter
Digital Electronics and Laboratory Computer Experiments

Abstract

In many applications of laboratory computers, it is necessary to sample a periodically varying analog signal and to store its digitized representation in the computer. In general, such data is meaningful only if certain conditions are met during the acquisition phase. The purpose of this experiment is to illustrate the principles involved in meeting these conditions. A more detailed discussion, including a detailed error analysis, is available in ref. D-4.

Figures and parts of the discussion reprinted with permission from R. Swanson, D. J. Thoennes, R. C. Williams, and C. L. Wilkins, and C. L. Wilkins, J. Chem. Educ., 52 (1975)
