Shock-Induced Dynamic Yielding in Lithium Fluoride Single Crystals

  • Chapter
Metallurgical Effects at High Strain Rates

Abstract

The study of solids at stresses where material rigidity cannot be ignored is important for an understanding of dynamic failure and thus learning about the complete constitutive relation for a solid. A number of solids in this stress range display stress relaxation which is described by a time dependent constitutive relation. The rate dependence is characterized by a decay of the elastic wave as a function of propagation distance. The early work in the area of stress relaxation involved polycrystals but the recent work has been generally on single crystals.
