Mössbauer Studies of an Enzyme System: Putidaredoxin and Cytochrome P450

Abstract

Iron proteins play a vital role in many biochemical reactions. Hemoglobin and myoglobin for instance bind molecular oxygen, cytochrome c is active in electron transport, and other iron proteins catalyze specific biochemical reactions. Cytochrome P450, the main topic of this discussion, combines all these features: It binds molecular oxygen and inserts one atom of it into a specific organic molecule. The reaction requires the transfer of two electrons, one at a time, through a specific iron-sulfur protein, putidaredoxin. Fig. 1 shows the complete enzymatic cycle(1) which will be discussed in more detail below and Table 1 indicates the wide occurrence and the biological significance of the cytochrome P450 enzyme system.
