Abstract
Two main approaches to a microscopic description of nuclear reactions are Feshbach’s unified theory 1) and the Wigner-Eisenbud R-matrix theory 2). It is the main aim of the present work to compare the results of both these theories for a realistic problem, namely the elastic scattering of neutrons from 12C below the inelastic threshold of 4.43 MeV, when the same model is employed to describe the nuclear structure. For this energy region, the cross section is dominated by positive parity states and for simplicity the negative parity contributions are ignored. Both a shell model and a collective model are used to describe the positive parity states of 13C.
