Abstract
New developments bring frequent changes in the details of evoked-response techniques. Consequently, this chapter attempts to deal with techniques at a fairly general level, to indicate the needs and problems and some ways in which they have been met. The author’s methods are described in some detail, because they bear upon research findings presented later; such detailed treatment should not be taken to mean that the methods described are being advocated as necessarily the best for the purpose. The reader will also notice considerable variation in the level of complexity of the material; it ranges from very elementary topics, such as electrode application, to rather difficult problems of data reduction. The selection of material has been governed to some extent by the questions encountered by the writer when he has been consulted by workers seeking to embark upon evoked-response research. It is hoped that the elementary portions will be of use to beginning investigators.
