Abstract
The giant neurons of gastropodal molluscs are very convenient not only for investigating the mechanism of nervous activity of these animals, but also for solving various problems of general interest (particularly in the field of action potential generation, synaptic transmission, etc.). These cells are convenient because of their large dimensions and their superficial location, which makes them suitable for extensive microelectrode analysis. Giant neurons have been used in our department for several years for the investigation of ionic relations between the extra and intracellular medium in the resting state and of ionic processes during spike generation; this paper summarizes the results of these investigations.
