Abstract

The vast majority of Spanish nouns form their plural in one of the following three ways:

Method

Main type of noun

Example of plural

Add -s

Ending in an unstressed vowel Many foreign words ending in a consonant

las casas los chalets los shows

Add -es

Spanish (not foreign) nouns ending in a consonant other than -s Nouns ending in a stressed vowel + -s Many nouns ending in a stressed vowel

las flores los ingleses los iranées

No change

Nouns already ending with an unstressed vowel + -s Families (people or things)

las crisis los virus los Blanco los Ford

Exceptions to these rules are discussed in the following sections.
