Abstract

Jorge Luis Borges wrote a powerful tale of a man who dreamed up a son. Later, when he himself was dying, he discovered that he, too, was an illusion having been the dream of someone else’s imagination. Borges was not referring to the dreams that occur during normal sleep which seem to be manifestations of our attempt to integrate our inner and outer worlds. He recognized that so many of us seem to be awake, but live our waking lives as if we are asleep and dreaming, and his story was about this illusion of wakefulness.
