Abstract
To understand structure-property relationships it is necessary to characterize the cation and anion nonstoichiometry and the structure of a system, for example, disorder in an antiferromagnetic material. For a ternary such as Ca:NiO the cation composition, i.e. Ca/Ni ratio, and oxygen nonstoichiometry must be defined. The presence of undesirable second phases should not be ignored; knowledge of such is critical. These phase equilibria are controlled by the temperature, cation composition, and oxygen partial pressure.
