Teenage Pregnancy

  • Chapter
Adolescent Gynecology

Abstract

The increased incidence of teenage pregnancies can be viewed as a result of demographical, biological, and social factors. Throughout human history, there have always been people who began childbearing and child-rearing at very early ages. At times and particularly in some cultures, becoming a mother or father in the early teens has been accepted and even encouraged. In other societies, such behavior has been frowned upon and the young people punished or, at best, neglected. Today, it is no longer believed that it is in the best interest of our communities or in the best interest of the young families themselves to neglect or ignore them. They are an integral part of our society and should be helped to become contributing citizens and to develop a strong, stable family life whenever possible.
