Abstract

Three authors (Mitton, 1978; Eanes, 1978; Handford, 1980) have recently reported upon the relationship between heterozygosity at the enzyme level and variation of morphological characters in natural populations. Both Mitton and Eanes have found higher morphological variability in homozygotes for enzyme loci than that in heterozygotes when studying two poikilotherm species. They have attributed these results to an increased homeostatic response of heterozygotes (Lerner, 1954). Handford fails to find this tendency in an homoiotherm. He suggests that homoiotherms and poikilotherms may differ in this respect.
