Abstract
In his introductory lecture Carpenter first reviewed the reuse of demolished concrete pavements, mostly for highway construction. This provides best benefit for least risk due to uniforcement of the original structure (thickness, placing of reinforcement), lower contaminant level (mostly from deicing salts with which engineers are now familiar), lower consequences of failure than with other types of structures.
