Abstract

This chapter does not pretend to be a comprehensive survey of the works that have been done in the field of feature compression in pattern recognition. It is simply a short description of the way the present author looks at the problem area. Correspondingly, the references are limited mostly to the works closely related to his own project. The only exception is the materials used in Section 2, which he found useful to illustrate some of the points he wanted to make.
