Microbiological Aspects of Regulating the Carbon Monoxide Content in the Earth’s Atmosphere

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Advances in Microbial Ecology ((AMIE,volume 2))

Abstract

Carbon monoxide has been known to be a permanent constituent of the earth’s atmosphere since 1949, when Migeotte identified absorption lines of CO in the solar spectrum for the first time. Subsequently it was found that the relative content of CO in “clean” atmosphere amounted to about 10-7 by volume, which makes the total content of CO in the earth’s atmosphere about 5 × 1014 g. Meanwhile, according to recent findings (Seiler, 1974), more than 6 × 1014 g of CO is annually discharged into the atmosphere as a result of human activities.
